Rumors & Ghosts

Moonshine Church has a very long history that dates back to the 1800's. Over the years there have been many urban legends that were embellished to include our church and cemetery which makes us famous for many things which just are not true. Because of this, our church has endured many instances of vandalism, trespassing, break-ins, and evidence of disrespectful behavior taking place. Just typing the name of our church into a search engine will bring up multiple accounts of murder, suicide, ghostly sightings, and unexplained phenomena. We do not wish to glorify or promote any of these stories, however here is one that we are most famously associated with:

THE BLUE EYED SIX- This true story tells about the first case of insurance fraud in Pennsylvania. A group of six local men (who all happened to have blue eyes) took out an insurance policy on an elderly man named Joseph Raber. In order to quickly cash in on the policies, they hatched a plan to murder him and make it look like an accident. After Mr. Raber had died, an investigation was conducted. Eventually five of the six were hanged at the Lebanon County Courthouse. One was acquitted.

      • The Blue Eyed Six are sometimes reported to have been hanged and to be buried in the cemetery at Moonshine United Zion Church near the site of the murder. In actuality, the hangings all took place at the county prison in Lebanon. Only Joseph Raber, the victim, is buried at Moonshine Church. The six conspirators were all buried separately by their families elsewhere in the county.

      • Local rumors and tradition tells that if you circle the church counter-clockwise at midnight and peer through the windows you will see 6 sets of blue eyes staring back at you. This has only produced some hilarious footage on our security cameras of people trying to see if it works. Rest assured, the only spirit that you will find at Moonshine Church is the Holy Spirit.

To the paranormal investigators, ghost hunters and thrill seekers: Please keep in mind that all of the urban legends surrounding Moonshine Church are mostly not factual. If you feel you must investigate and see it for yourself, please take note that our church and cemetery are PRIVATE PROPERTY which is closed to the public from dusk to dawn. Due to the many break-ins and vandalism associated with this local notoriety, we have unfortunately had to add security lights and video cameras. We do report suspicious activity and report incidences to PA State Troopers as well as Indiantown Gap Military Police.
